The Kimball Piano Company was founded in 1857 by William Wallace Kimball in Chicago, Illinois, initially as a piano and organ retail business. By the late 19th century, Kimball transitioned into manufacturing, building its first pianos in 1888. The company quickly became one of the largest piano manufacturers in the United States, producing a wide range of upright, grand, and player pianos. Its success was fueled by innovations in mass production techniques and its ability to meet growing demand. Kimball pianos gained a reputation for solid craftsmanship and affordability, appealing to middle-class households during the early 20th century. The Great Depression impacted the company, but it recovered by diversifying into other industries, including furniture and electronics, before eventually refocusing on piano production.

Kimball grand pianos are notable for their use of full-perimeter plate designs, which enhance structural stability and tonal resonance. They also feature high-quality spruce soundboards designed to maximize sound projection and clarity. During its peak years, Kimball integrated proprietary advancements in action mechanisms to improve touch responsiveness. Although production ceased in 1996 following the company’s sale, Kimball pianos remain valued for their historical significance and durable build. Restored Kimball grands continue to be found in homes and institutions, appreciated for their classic American design and dependable performance.
