Kawai Musical Instruments Manufacturing Co. was founded in 1927 by Koichi Kawai in Hamamatsu, Japan. Koichi Kawai, a skilled apprentice of Yamaha founder Torakusu Yamaha, developed Japan’s first complete piano action. After Yamaha’s death, Kawai pursued his vision of creating world-class instruments by establishing his own company. Despite challenges such as World War II, which disrupted production, Kawai rebuilt and expanded, earning a reputation for producing high-quality pianos that combined traditional craftsmanship with innovative technologies.
In the 1950s, Kawai introduced advancements that set it apart in the global piano industry. The company pioneered the use of composite materials in piano action parts, making their instruments more durable and stable in varying climates. By the 1970s, Kawai became a leader in digital piano technology, blending acoustic and electronic elements to produce versatile instruments suitable for professional and home use. The company’s Milestone achievement came in 1989 with the release of the Kawai RX Series grand pianos, acclaimed for their rich tone and precision.
Today, Kawai remains a globally respected brand, producing a wide range of acoustic, digital, and Hybrid pianos. Their continued commitment to innovation is exemplified by the introduction of carbon fiber composite action parts, which enhance durability and responsiveness, and their focus on sustainability through environmentally friendly manufacturing practices. With nearly a century of expertise, Kawai is celebrated for its dedication to artistry, innovation, and its enduring legacy in the piano world.
