Steinway & Sons was founded in 1853 by German immigrant Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg (later Henry Steinway) in New York City. The 1950s Steinway Model S 5’1″ grand pianos reflected the mid-century craftsmanship values of the company, combining traditional handcrafting with some mechanized processes to maintain precision. Built with solid hardwood rims and spruce soundboards, these pianos featured Steinway’s signature warm tone and rich bass, despite their compact size. The post-war manufacturing ethos emphasized durability, while the Model S was particularly valued for its ability to fit into smaller spaces without sacrificing sound quality. Artisans at Steinway were known for meticulously shaping and voicing each instrument, ensuring that even the smaller Model S offered a powerful, balanced sound across the keyboard.

This piano has gone through a two day process involving cleaning, key action regulation for improved performance, and a pitch raise/fine tuning. The bench originally was a flat wood top which we refurbished to a padded tufted style for added comfort and elegance.

The overall tonal qualities of the piano can best be described as warm and balanced.  Minor hammer felt voicing work was done to help unify the tone across the piano.
